Mickey Tate was born September 3, 1956 in Columbus, Ohio and passed away on March 15, 2026 at the age of 69. He attended Douglas Elementary, Franklin Middle School and graduated from Mohawk High School. He later attended Columbus State and graduated from Ohio Media School.
He was a veteran, black empowerment activist, respected strength coach, personal trainer, powerlifter, mentor and most of all father/uncle. He served honorably in the United States Air Force from 1976 to 1979, including assignments in Japan and Korea. In the years that followed, he became well known in Columbus for his work in fitness and youth mentorship, often training and encouraging others with both discipline and heart.
Westside Barbell Member. Strength Coach at Douglas Boxing gym, Columbus City Schools, and countless Columbus residents, TV/internet personalities, and athletes.
As a powerlifter, Mickey earned recognition for outstanding bench press achievements, including public recognition as a Master's World Record holder in 1997. He was admired not only for his physical strength, but for the resilience, wisdom, and motivation he shared with others. A man who overcame hardship, devoted himself to personal growth, and became a source of inspiration in his family and community.
Beyond athletics, Mickey's life told a larger story of resilience. A man who overcame major personal challenges, embraced sobriety in 1989, and became a source of encouragement to others in recovery and in the community. He was also publicly recognized as a devoted father, uncle, OG, and role model whose leadership reached far beyond his own family.
He was preceded in death by his parents: Eddie Dorsey and Daisy Mae Tate and siblings: Eddie and Alice.
Left to cherish his memory as his Children: Bianca, Joel, Gisel Brown, Isa, Amirah, Hannibal, Makiyn, Malik and Njeri Tate; Siblings: Gail Cates, Jacquelin, Gary, Terri and Tracey Tate; Grandchildren: Camille Gordan, Nia, Nigel, Nameer Scott, Joel, Silas, Jewellz Brown, Antonio, Isaiah Curtis, Jeremiah Owens, Jahdai, Jarvezz, Ava Tate-Thomas, Aliko and Daisy Tate along with other extended family members and friends.
