Patricia Yvonne Mattox was welcomed into this world on August 31, 1953, in Beards Fork, West Virginia, by her loving parents, Sam Terry and Demetris Terry who embraced her as a radiant light and a blessing to their family. She was a beautiful soul who touched everyone she met and could light up any room with her presence. Saved, Sanctified, and filled with the Holy Spirit, she walked in love and lived as a true example of God’s Grace.
Patricia Yvonne Mattox the fifth of thirteen children—a vibrant thread in a tapestry woven with faith, resilience, and family unity. Growing up in Man, West Virginia, Patricia’s early years were filled with laughter, shared stories, and the joyful chaos of a bustling household. Patricia shared an unbreakable bond with all her siblings—a connection through shared memories, mutual respect, and unconditional love. That unity was unmistakable to anyone who encountered the Terry family, to know one Terry was to feel the presence of them all.
Patricia attended and graduated from Man High School where she participated in various extracurricular activities, including serving as a majorette, and performing in the school band. She engaged in community and church programs that nurtured her leadership and love of dance.
Then there was love. At the tender age of eighteen, Pat met the love of her life, Robert (Dewitt) Mattox—a moment they both described as “love at first sight.” What began as an instant spark grew into a divine connection, rooted in faith, trust, and shared purpose. Their bond blossomed into 49 years of unwavering devotion, a partnership marked by laughter, prayer, and the kind of love that inspires generations.
Their mutual love for God and family became the foundation of a beautiful life together. Through every season—joyful and challenging—they stood hand in hand, modeling grace, resilience, unity and forged a bond of two families. Their union was blessed with five beautiful children: Robert, Sherman, Marcus, Deneka, and Leslie, each a reflection of their love and legacy. Patricia ’s love extended beyond her immediate family; she formed lasting bonds with her in-laws.
Patricia had a fulfilling career with the State of Ohio Bureau of Motor Vehicles, where she served with diligence, professionalism, and a warm smile that made every interaction memorable. After years of dedicated service, she retired, leaving behind a legacy of integrity and kindness.
Beyond her professional life, Patricia’s heart was deeply rooted in faith and service. She led the church nursery ministry for over thirty years, nurturing generations of little ones with patience, love, and a gentle spirit. Her presence in the nursery was more than a role—it was a calling. She created a safe, joyful space where children felt God’s love through her care, and where parents could worship knowing their little ones were in trusted hands. To her nieces, nephews, and cousins, Patricia was a second mother, a prayer warrior, and a trusted confidante. She offered gentle corrections, heartfelt encouragement, and unwavering support. Her legacy lives on in the values she instilled, the traditions she upheld, and the love she gave so freely.
On Saturday, October 25th, the sunset on the life of our beloved Patricia Yvonne Mattox. At 72 years old, she departed this world surrounded by love, leaving behind a legacy of faith, family, and unwavering devotion.
Patricia was preceded in death by her cherished grandparents, Mattie and James Watkins; her devoted parents, Sam and Demetris Terry; her beloved brother, Tony Terry; and her dear sister-in-law, Genna Terry, Mother-In-Law/Father-in-Law- Queen Esther Brooks Mattox and Thomas Hugo Mattox, sisters in law, Betty Reed, Dorothy Mattox, Francis Jones and Diane Martin, brothers in law- Thomas Mattox Jr. and Luther Mattox . Though they are no longer here with us in body, we trust with full hearts that they are rejoicing together in the presence of the Lord, reunited in eternal peace.
Patricia is lovingly survived by her devoted husband of 49 years, Robert “Dewitt” Mattox, and their five beloved children: Robert (Trina) Stevenson, Sherman (Latasha) Mattox, Marcus (Ma’Jeana) Mattox, Deneka Mattox, and Leslie (Akeem) Salau. She was a proud and nurturing mother whose love and guidance shaped the lives of her children and extended to every branch of her family tree. She uplifted supported and reinforced her love with each of them daily. She trained her children in the way that they should go and extended that love to her grandchildren. Her children and grandchildren were her most prized possessions and she was theirs.
She also leaves behind a strong and loving legacy through her siblings: Seretha Terry, Janet Booker, Sam (Kathy) Terry, Francina (Larry) Teague, Mattie Ransom, Leroy (Francis) Terry, James (Stacie) Terry, Sandra (Darrell) Ferrell, Carl Terry, Leslie Terry, and Alex (Harriett) Terry, sisters and brother in laws, Brenda Terry, Pamela Madison, Qulonia (Thomas) Tyree, Rodney Mattox, Deborah Mattox, Kenneth Mattox, Vera (Jerrold) Brown, Cynthia (Clarence) Barnett, Calvin Mattox, Monica Mattox, Karen Mattox and Corey Mattox . Grandchildren- Kwamir Owusu, Nevaeh Mattox, Mattox Salau, Armoni Salau, Malachi Salau, Malik Salau, Fawas Salau Mujib Salau, Valencia Williams, Dante Davis, Jamar Davis, Michael Stevenson, Shaquita Stevenson, ShaQuala Stevenson, Isiah Stevenson, Ashley Kinney, Tamia Kinney.
Patricia also leaves behind a loving circle of nieces, nephews, cousins, aunts, uncles, and dear friends who will continue to honor her memory and carry forward the love she so freely shared.
The overwhelming outpour of love following Patricia’s transition stands as a testament to the dept of her impact. Ever selfless in life and even in death, she gifted others a new lease on life through organ donation. Her compassion and steadfast love endure as her living legacy; echoing in the hearts of all who were privileged to know her.
