It is with heavy hearts yet joyful spirits that we celebrate the life of Philip Eugene Edwards Sr., who passed away peacefully on May 5, 2026, at the age of 88. Born on September 12, 1937, in Anna, Ohio, Philip was a loving father and patriarch. He was a devout church member, and dedicated veteran who made significant contributions to his family and community.
Philip grew up in the Catholic Church, where he served as an altar boy, and later embraced the Baptist faith upon marrying the love of his life, Gwendolyn (Harmon) Edwards. Together, they built a life rich in love and faith, a testament to their enduring commitment to one another. In his spiritual journey, Philip served as a Deacon at Second Baptist Church, where his faith and commitment to service inspired others in the community.
His admirable service to the United States Air Force during the Korean Conflict saw him stationed overseas in Okinawa, JPN, and throughout various locations within the United States, including Wyoming, Wilmington, OH, Massachusetts, Alaska, and Nevada. After his honorable discharge, Philip brought his dedication and leadership to the aerospace industry, where he thrived in engineering before becoming a General Foreman at Speco, an aerospace division of Kelsey-Hayes Company, earning the respect of colleagues and supervisors alike.
Philip was an avid fan of sports and took great pleasure in following the Springfield Wildcats, Urbana Hillclimbers, Las Vegas Raiders, and The Ohio State Buckeyes. He cherished the moments spent watching his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren participate in sports, taking joy in their accomplishments and the camaraderie of the community. He also loved fishing, camping, and traveling, particularly to Alabama, where he created countless cherished memories.
Philip was preceded in death by his wife: Gwendolyn Edwards; mother: Betty Edwards; son: Anthony Harmon; daughter: Antionette Garrett; brother: Terrance Edwards; sister: Patricia Whitfield; in laws: Alvin and Mae Francis Harmon.
He leaves to cherish his memory and carry on his legacy; Children: SSGT Philip (Lisa) Edwards, Jr., MSGT Michael (Tonya) Edwards, Angela (James) Peterson, Marc Edwards; 18 Grandchildren; Great-Grandchildren; Special Cousins: Carleton Abdullah and Johnnie Mae Miller and a host of other family and friends.
Philip was known for his sharp intelligence and quick wit, rarely missing a chance to invent a memorable nickname for those he loved. Names that somehow managed to tease, charm, and endure all at once. He leaves behind a legacy of kindness and commitment, deeply cherished by all who had the pleasure of knowing him. May his soul find eternal peace.
