It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Roderick Todd McElwain, who left this world on September 26, 2025, in his beloved hometown of Columbus, Ohio. Born on November 11, 1965, Roderick, affectionately known as Pooh or Rod, lived a life marked by love, service, and unwavering dedication to his family and community. He was 59 years old at the time of his passing, succumbing to heart failure.

Roderick was the cherished son of Andy Vermont English Jr. and Nettie Ree Gaddis. He was also a beloved brother to Reggie Carson, Terri English-Trotter, and Ronnie McElwain. He was preceded in death by his loving family members, including his father, grandfather Vermont English, grandmother Hosephine Holmes, grandfather Willie Gaddis, grandmother Ruby Gaddis, and grandfather Epp Tatum. Their memories will forever be etched in the hearts of those he leaves behind.

From 1987 to 1992, Roderick proudly served in the United States Air Force, exemplifying his commitment to his country. This spirit of service continued throughout his professional life as he worked diligently for various fire departments including Columbus Airport, Columbus, Madison Township, Harrison Township, and Worthington municipalities. For 22 years, he dedicated his life to the Dayton Fire Department, where he was known not only for his bravery but also for his compassion and leadership.

In addition to his career, Roderick was a beloved member of the Apostolic Christian Church of Christ, where he found community and fellowship. His hobbies included photography, poetry, and culinary arts, reflecting his artistic nature and love for the finer things in life.
