It is with deep sadness and a heavy heart that we announce the passing of Rodney Gates, a cherished soul who left this world on June 12, 2026, at the age of 52, after a courageous battle with illness. Born on November 17, 1973, in Columbus, Ohio, Rodney lived a life full of love, laughter, and service to others.

Rodney was the beloved son of Betty Gates and the late Craig Burden. He was lovingly raised alongside his brother, Cedric Gates, and sisters, Jennette (Kevin) Bowen, Angelique Calloway, and Brittany (Brandon) Jennings. He was predeceased by his father: Craig Burden; his grandparents: John Burden, Elizabeth Josephine Burden, Mattie Lee Barnett, and Elmore Gillium as well as his beloved daughters: Shamya Shultz and Sierra Smith, who will all be welcoming him with open arms.

Rodney was a dedicated family man, survived by his devoted Mother: Betty Gates; and Step-Father: Willie Cargill. He leaves behind a legacy in his Children: Greggory (Tiana) Smith, Rodney (Nikeisha) Gates, Raven Gates, Savon Gates, Armani Gates, Cameren Gates, and LeoDitus Henderson. His love and guidance will continue to live on in his ten Grandchildren: Kimara Smith, Karter Smith, Saylor Gates, Santana Gates, Nathan Gates, Nora Gates, Dewayne Long, Harmony Smith, Serenity Smith, and LeoDitus Henderson II. Rodney was also a cherished uncle to Tymeka (Cedric) Brown, Camia (Michael) Daniels, Myshekeyla Johnson ,Makayla Bowen, Camara Gates, Darius Gates, and Jaden Bowen and special Loving Friend: Linda Roby

Rodney was a proud alumnus of Marion-Franklin High School, graduating in 1992, and soon after, he bravely served his country in the U.S. Army. His career in construction showcased his dedication and work ethic, building not only structures but also strong foundations of friendship and respect among his colleagues.

A passionate sports enthusiast, Rodney had an unwavering love for the Ohio State Buckeyes and the San Francisco 49ers, often found cheering them on with fervor. His love for music, particularly Southern blues, added rhythm and warmth to his life and those around him.

Rodney was a beacon of light, known for his infectious laughter and the joy he brought into every room. He was the life of the party, a true friend, and a motivator, who touched the lives of so many with his vibrant spirit and kind heart.

The Gates family extends their deepest gratitude for the outpouring of love, support, and kindness during this time of remembrance. Rodney's life and legacy will forever remain in the hearts of those who knew and loved him.
