Shawn was born in Columbus, Ohio, on June 1, 1966, and entered eternal peace on July 11, 2026. He took his last breath at 2:30 a.m. with his daughter, Kaila, right by his side.
Shawn graduated from Reynoldsburg High School in 1984, where he was a phenomenal student-athlete. He broke records in both track and field and football. He then attended Ohio University in Athens, Ohio, graduating in 1988 with a bachelor’s degree in Physical Education. While at Ohio University, he also played football and joined the fraternity that forever impacted his life, Alpha Phi Alpha. His 1906 brotherhood and its legacy remained with him throughout his life.
After college, Shawn held a variety of positions, including juvenile correctional officer, principal, and security officer. No matter where he worked, he was known for his dedication and commitment.
Shawn met Pam in 1993, and together they welcomed their pride and joy, Kaila, in 2000. Although their relationship changed over the years, they remained supportive friends and were united in their love for their daughter.
Shawn enjoyed watching football, basketball, and just about any sport with his family, especially his two older brothers, Jeff and Greg Gibbs. Even though they all rooted for different teams, spending time together was what they cherished most. Whether it was cookouts, Super Bowl gatherings, concerts, or festivals, none of them would have admitted it, but those moments together were the ones they treasured most.
The last five years of Shawn’s life brought some of his greatest health challenges. He grew tired of being tired, and while his passing leaves a tremendous void, his family finds comfort in knowing he is finally at peace and reunited with his beloved parents.
Shawn was preceded in death by his parents, Willmatyne and Willie Gibbs.
He leaves behind his beloved daughter, Kaila; his brothers, Jeff and Greg Gibbs; his nephews, JD (April) and Antwaun (Toni); his aunts, Betty, Arlene, Essie, and Goldean; his uncles, Robert (Lala) and Lewis (Burnetta); his close cousins, Derrick, Valerie, Dawna (Al), and Anthony (Denise); his second mother, Mattie; and many other cherished family members and friends, including Oscar, Dewayne, Jerome, Pam and Paula.
Shawn’s strength, love for family, and unwavering brotherhood will never be forgotten. Though he is no longer with us, the memories he created and the love he shared will live on in the hearts of all who knew him.
