Suni was born on August 27, 1977, in Salis, Mississippi, to Rosie Mae Greene and Rufus Grier.
Suni worked various jobs throughout his career, including Sundowns Landscaping, Suga Ray’s Restaurant, Williams & Marlon Gary Chapel of Peace Funeral Home, and the Richland County Juvenile Detention Center. He received his G.E.D. and was extremely proud of that accomplishment.
He attended New Community Temple Church as well as Providence Baptist Church whenever he was able. He was doubly blessed to have two pastors he could call on—Pastor Henry Bradley and Pastor Mark Cobb.
Suni loved life and, most of all, loved his family. If he was for you, he had your back 110%. He enjoyed shooting pool, fishing, bowling, watching TikTok, and playing his Xbox—even having hospital staff hook up his game for him. He took pride in instilling wisdom in his nieces and nephews. He was a loyal fan of the Lakers, Cleveland Browns, Cleveland Cavaliers, Ohio State, and any Ohio team.
He was the family’s grill master and “Turkey King,” proudly claiming to be the best—and he was. He loved playing spades, dominos, and chess. He didn’t like to lose, and he would let you know, often hollering “GET IT!”—a sound many will never forget.
Suni deeply loved his daughter, whom he called his princess. He was incredibly proud of her accomplishments as a Registered Nurse in the medical field. He was also proud of all the children he helped raise over the years, including Olivia Osborne, Rakayla Smith, Taraji Smith, Jacob Guy, Kayon Manns, Audrene Taylor, Aceson Taylor, and Layfette Taylor. He cared for them as if they were his own.
He loved his wife unconditionally, spoiling her in every way and affectionately calling her “Bay.” Suni was a gentle giant to many but could be a fierce protector when needed. He took great pride in caring for his family.
Though he was the baby of the bunch, he carried himself like the boss. His presence will truly be missed.
Suni leaves to cherish his memory his loving wife of 30 years, Aretha Grier; one daughter, Yahnseik Nixon; four sisters, Patricia Coffee of Houston, Texas, Georgia Cottrell of Mansfield, Johnnie Mae (Eddie) King of McCool, Mississippi, and Oriana (Jaylen) Allen of Austin, Texas; and one brother, Sam Grier of Mansfield, Ohio.
He was preceded in death by his beloved parents, Rosie Mae Greene and Rufus Grier, who welcomed him into his heavenly home.
He also leaves behind a host of nieces and nephews, 10 godchildren, great-nieces and great-nephews, aunts, uncles, cousins, friends, and extended family members who will forever hold his memory in their hearts.
