Sylvia B Watkins Miller

Jun 26, 1944 — May 28, 2026

Sylvia B. Watkins Miller, affectionately known as "Mu" and/or "Bren," departed this life surrounded by her loving family on May 28, 2026, in Columbus, Ohio. A cherished wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, great-great-grandmother, and friend, Mu leaves behind a legacy of love, faith, and service that will forever live in the hearts of all who were blessed to know her. A woman whose heart knew no strangers, she was widely known for her kindness, generosity, unwavering love for others, and gentle spirit. She was truly an angel on earth.

Born in Atlanta, Georgia, at Grady Memorial Hospital, Sylvia lived a life marked by compassion, strength, and faith. Whether offering a warm meal, sharing a hearty laugh, lending a listening ear, or offering a heartfelt prayer, she had a remarkable gift for making everyone feel welcome. Throughout the Nelson Park, Eastgate, and East Columbus communities, she became known as a beloved presence whose home and heart were always open.

One of the many ways Sylvia expressed her love was through sharing the Word of God and through her cooking. She believed that feeding the soul and feeding the body went hand in hand. Anyone who knew Mu knew that her kitchen was a place of comfort, fellowship, and love. From her famous homemade banana pudding and delicious sweet potato pies to her perfectly fried fish and beloved secret-recipe coney dogs, her cooking became a treasured part of family gatherings and celebrations. And if you knew Mu well, you knew that one of her favorite meals was a simple bowl of buttermilk and cornbread-a comfort food she enjoyed throughout her life.

A devoted woman of faith, Sylvia was an active and dedicated church member who faithfully served wherever she was needed. Whether helping members of the congregation during difficult times, participating in fundraising efforts, offering encouragement and prayer, or sharing Bible study verses, she gave of herself wholeheartedly. In addition to her many acts of service, Mu had a remarkable gift for preserving memories and sharing words of encouragement. She faithfully documented family events, important milestones, and everyday moments, ensuring that stories and memories would never be forgotten. Her handwritten notes, cards, letters, and carefully written Bible verses were treasured by those who received them. Whether offering wisdom, comfort, congratulations, or simply reminding someone they were loved, Mu had a special way of putting her heart on paper. Her thoughtful words became lasting keepsakes that continue to inspire and encourage her family and friends.

One of Sylvia's greatest joys was her family, especially her beloved son, Big Ronnie, her only child and the pride of her life. She loved him deeply and never missed an opportunity to tell him how much he meant to her or how proud she was of the family that grew from him. Through her son, she was blessed with a large and loving legacy of six grandchildren, thirteen great-grandchildren, and two great-great-grandchildren, each of whom brought her immense joy and pride. She often marveled at how her family continued to grow and considered every one of them a precious blessing.

Music was another of Mu's great passions. She found joy, comfort, and celebration in song. Whether listening to Al Green's The Lord Will Make a Way, enjoying The Spiritual Tornados, or accompanying Sonny as he visited and performed in churches throughout Columbus, music was woven into the fabric of her life. She loved singing along to her favorite songs, enjoying gospel music, and filling her home with melodies that brought happiness and peace.

Sylvia also took great pride in presenting herself with grace and elegance. She loved dressing beautifully and always looked her best whenever she stepped out. Even while cooking at home, she carried herself with poise and confidence. Family and friends will fondly remember her signature fragrance, White Diamonds perfume, which became as much a part of her presence as her warm smile. Yet her beauty extended far beyond her appearance, she possessed a radiant spirit that shined from within. Whenever someone complimented her beauty or asked her secret, Mu would simply smile and say, "Jesus and Vaseline." That humble response perfectly reflected the woman she was.

In the latter years of her life, Sylvia faced illness with remarkable courage and determination. Refusing to allow her challenges to define her, she lived each day with faith and purpose. Her steadfast belief in God was reflected in the phrase she often shared with family and friends: "God's got me." Those words became a testament to the strength, hope, and trust in God that carried her through life's most difficult moments.

Sylvia was preceded in death by her mother, Gladys King; her brother, Billy Johnson of Atlanta, Georgia; her sister, Estella King of Columbus, Ohio; her grandparents, Roy King and Willie Mae King; Ida Mae Johnson and Charlie Jack Johnson.

She leaves to cherish her precious memory her beloved Son: Ronald L. McConnell; her surviving Spouse: William "Sonny" J. Miller Jr.; her Stepson: William J. Miller III; her Grandchildren: Ronald L. McConnell II, Lawrence T. Howard-Steward (Dwayne Steward), Chaunté A. Green, Shaná A. Green, Shavonda A. Green, and Sha'Ronn M. Green; along with a host of Great-Grandchildren and Great-Great-Grandchildren. She is also survived by her Father: Deacon Charles King; her Sister: Cynthia "Cyndi" King; her Brothers: Willie King and Charles "Barnard" King; her Aunt: Celesta Scott of Georgia; her Special Cousin: Sylvia Ferguson; her devoted Niece: Shirley Johnson; and a host of other loving relatives, chosen family members, neighbors, church family, and dear friends.

Sylvia's legacy is one of love, laughter, faith, service, and generosity. She was humble, sweet, kind, selfless, and giving beyond measure. She carried herself with grace, treated others with compassion, and made a lasting impact on everyone fortunate enough to cross her path. Her life reminds us that the greatest gifts we can offer are kindness, compassion, faith, and a welcoming spirit.

Though she will be deeply missed, the countless memories she created and the lives she touched will continue to inspire all who knew and loved her. Sylvia was a true angel on earth-beautiful inside and out-and her love will remain with us forever.

"God's got me."

And now, she rests peacefully in His care.
