Life began for Phillip Wayne Holmes on October 7, 1949 in Columbus, Ohio to the late Willie and Zelma (Pitts) Holmes. Phillip enjoyed playing and watching basketball. He also enjoyed watching football.

Phillip graduated from East High School where he played basketball and wrestled. He later started working for the City of Columbus in the sanitation department. After retiring from the City of Columbus, Philip became a driver for Corporate Courier.

Phillip met his sweetheart, Emma Freeman, at Franklin Junior High School. He always knew she would be the one he would marry. Phillip and Emma were united in holy matrimony on June 15, 1968. To this union, two children were born: Tamara and Bryant Holmes.
