Reginald Charles Howard Anglen was born on February 20th 1952 in Cleveland, Ohio. The oldest of 11 children, Reggie was born blind. His blindness was the catapult to a life’s ministry in service to and for others, as a tremendous advocate for the blind and one of Life’s most deliberate statements about how a disability can be turned into a strength.
In his youth, he moved from Cleveland to Columbus to attend the Ohio State School for the Blind. After graduation, he enrolled at Central State University, ultimately transferring to Ohio State University where he graduated from the School of Journalism. After graduation he worked with at-risk youths and in public relations for Ohio State University.
He was selected Man of the Year by the Lion’s Club in 1974, was elected President of the Society of Black Journalist, Columbus Chapter. He is a member of the Sigma Phi Beta Fraternity. He graduated from Leadership Columbus’ Signature Program in 1979. He is also the author of his own autobiography, I’m Not Special, Just Me: The Reggie Anglen Story.
His contributions to the Columbus community are innumerable, but he saved his best for last by founding The Lighthouse at Teachable Moments, a grass roots organization intended to serve the needs of those who are blind and visually challenged over the age of 40 in Central Ohio.
Reggie was preceded in death by mother, brother, sister….., and survived by father and step mother, bothers sisters…nieces, nephews, notable cousins, grand nephews and nieces and so forth.. If not by name list the number of them (such as 456 grand nieces and 682 grand nephews).
Thanks to his creation of The Lighthouse at Teachable Moments, his life’s work will become immortalized and his spirit will embody the organization’s strategic statement:” Vision Loss is not a Loss of Vision!”
