Charles Hutchins

Rev. MSgt. Charles Edward Hutchins of Columbus, OH passed away at the age 78 on the morning of Thanksgiving Day, November 24, 2022. Charles is a superhero to those who loved him. Just like how he dealt with life experiences, he fought his battle with cancer with strength, grace, and humor. In his final moments he was surrounded by his wife, children, grandchildren while listening to his favorite songs.

Charles was born in Aragon, GA on July 15, 1944 to the union of Jasper and Fannie Hutchins. He is the youngest of sixteen siblings. He moved with his family to Columbus, Ohio in 1948. Growing up, he was a paperboy and graduated from East High School where he played the clarinet in the school band, was a member of the Tigers’ football team and was the captain of the wrestling team.

After high school, he voluntary enlisted in the military where he served in Europe and in Asia. He retired from the United States Air Force as a Master Sergeant at Clark Air Force Base, Philippines after 20 years of dedicated service, where he met his wife, Maru. He continued his public service in the civilian sector for Defense Supply Center Columbus and retired after working in multiples positions including as an adjudicator and a computer network engineer. He was also a member of the American Legion, a supporter Columbus chapter of the NAACP and ordained by the Universal Life Church Ministries.

Charles loved college football and was a true Buckeye fan. He also admired science and space and thoroughly enjoyed watching The Big Bang Theory, Star Wars, and The Cosmos. He was a book lover and a fan of many authors across different genres. Charles enjoyed fishing, gardening, and spending time with his grandchildren and his dog.

Charles was known to have a sparkling sense of humor and always found a way to make you think methodically about life choices.

Charles is preceded in death by his parents; sisters Ella White, Louise Whatley, Grace Anderson, Mary Hunter, Bertha Willis, Clara, Grace, Emma, and Janice; brothers Jesse, Samuel, William, I.V., Jimmy and Franklin Eugene Hutchins.

Charles is survived by his wife, Marujah Hutchins; children, Mary MC Hutchins, Jesse EJ (Annastasia) Hutchins; grandchildren, Chasity Howard and Lennox Hutchins and a host of nieces, nephews and cousins.

Visitation 1:00 PM and Funeral Service 2:00 PM Saturday, December 3, 2022, at MARLAN J. GARY FUNERAL HOME, THE CHAPEL OF PEACE EAST, 5456 E. Livingston Ave. (one block east of Noe Bixby, turn North on Lonsdale Rd).
