Rev. Oather Lee Burney Jr., age 64. Sunrise April 27, 1953 in Akron, OH and Sunset August 8, 2017 in Columbus, OH. Rev. Burney was a graduate of Buchtel High School attended Kent State University. He served in the U.S. Navy. He is the former pastor of Firestone Park Baptist Church and Church of renewed Hope and administrative pastor of St. Paul Missionary Baptist Church in Akron, OH. He currently served on the ministerial staff at Faith Ministries. Rev. Burney was preceded in death by his parents, Oather Lee Burney Sr. and Lucille Glymph Burney and brother, James Sims. Left to cherish his memory, wife Felicia E. Burney; daughter, Whitney L. Burden; sons, Justin L. (Jasmine) Carter and Cleveland (Nina) Brown V; brother, Bernard (Michelle) Burney; sisters, Shirley Lipford, Kathy Robinson, and Willie Chapman; brother in law, Henry Robinson; grandchildren, Zane Robert Carter, Kennedy ‘Jade Brown and Cleveland Brown VI is on the way. Visitation 9:00am and Home Going Service 10:00am Friday August 18, 2017 at Faith Ministries Church 2747 Agler Rd. Interment at Dayton National Cemetery.

It was with great sadness, hearing of Oathers passing. Having grown up in the Buchtel High School district with Oather, and meeting his family. Such a great loss to everyone who knew him. Please accept our heart felt sorrow and remember the wonderful times with Oather.

My heart is heavy right now, but my soul is rejoicing, knowing that Pastor Burney is in the presence of the Lord….You will truly be missed Pastor Burney whom my daughter grew up calling him “O” because not only did Felicia teach her in daycare he did also. We will miss those funny jokes you told to us and you will forever hold a special place in our hearts Gone but we will never forget you…Love you dearly Pastor Oather Burney

Our condolences to the Burney family. We are so sorry for your loss. As the Apostle Paul said in 2 Corinthians 5:8, “We are confident and willing rather to be absent from the body, and to be present with the Lord.” For the brief period that we’ve known Pastor he exemplified the characteristics of Christian faith, charity, and love. Truly, this is an individual whose life made a positive impact on the lives of others. He will be missed.

I am so sorry for your loss. Oather was a great person. I went to Kent State with him, he taught me (many of us) how to drive a bus. He gave me a beautiful Stetson hat. I came across this last week and thought to look him up. I was so sorry to hear he passed away. I worked at the VA hospital in Dayton and am also sorry I missed the opportunity to visit him.
