On February 23, 194, Robert Lee Smith Sr. (80) was born in Birmingham, Alabama, the son of Emmett and Emily Smith. Robert passed away at Riverside Methodist Hospital in Columbus, Ohio, on January 31, 2022.
As a child, Robert moved to West Virginia, then moved to Columbus, Ohio where he met Mary Elizabeth Byers, who then became his wife. Their children are two girls and one boy. His three children are Robert Lee Smith Jr., Ivy Smith, and Amelia Smith.
For decades Robert painted college dorms, Big Bear, and Kroger stores all over Ohio. Until his retirement, he worked for B&D Maintenance as a hauler at the Ohio State Fair. Walking was his favorite activity in Ohio, and his favorite places to go were the zoo and any park he could find. In addition to collecting coins and art, he also loved wrapping pennies. Above all else, he was a kind, loving father and his family and friends will miss him dearly.
Robert is preceded in death by his parents, Emmett Sr. and Emily Smith; sister, Geraldine Smith Williams of Long Beach, California and Helen Anderson of Cleveland, Ohio.
Robert is survived by his brothers, Emmett Smith Jr and twin Richard Smith of Columbus, Ohio; sister, Bertha Nell Armstrong of Columbus, Ohio; children, Robert Lee (Madonna) Smith, Jr. of San Diego, California, Ivy Smith of Columbus, Ohio, and Amelia Smith of Columbus, Ohio; grandchildren, Marlisha Lynn (Taylor) Gilmore, Samuel Joiner Toles, Jr., Norma Smith of Los Angeles, California, Jacques Jamal Smith, Marshaun DeWayne Smith, and Crème Devine McClarity; great grandson, Zachary Gilmore of Columbus, Ohio; and a host of other relatives and friends.
Visitation 10:00am and Funeral 11:00am Friday, February 18, 2022 at MARLAN J. GARY FUNERAL HOME, THE CHAPEL OF PEACE NORTH, 2500 Cleveland Ave.
