My beloved mother, Shirley Lucile (Mason) Wilson passed away at Mt. Carmel East Hospital in Columbus, Ohio on October 2, 2022, surrounded by her family. She was 98 years old. She was born on September 26, 1924, in Decatur, Illinois to Grafton J. and Lucile C. (Jackson) Mason, one of five children.

She graduated from Decatur High School in 1942, and, with her parents blessing, moved to Chicago. While there studying sewing and fashion design, her older brother, Julius, introduced her to his friend, Charles Wilson. They fell in love and were married on November 28, 1948, in Decatur. They settled down to married life. My parents were blessed; they were a perfect match. I was born September 19, 1949. My mother was a housewife. She tended the garden each year and canned fruits and vegetables. She enjoyed sewing, needlework, and spending time with family and friends.

In 1961 my father’s job moved us to Columbus, Ohio where we joined Second Baptist Church, and my father became a deacon. My mom babysat neighborhood children and her nieces Toni and Tracey. She was very happy during those years with my father and I visiting friends and taking family trips. When I left for college, she took a parttime job at Sears catalogue desk. With her calm manner it was a perfect fit. She continued to work there until her retirement. My father died in 1975 at the age of 52. It was a terrible loss for my mother, and I worried about her, but my mother was a strong person she didn’t let her world come to an end. She picked herself up and began a new life. She joined a senior center. She made new friends and began to travel. As always, she found solace in her church. She and I went on a cruise and discovered we loved it. We spent many happy days sailing together. My mother had a sweet disposition and great patience. She always had a kind word and loved meeting new people.

She cherished her friends. Her church was a major part of her life. She was a good Christian. My mom and I were close. She was a night owl, so I called her every night after the late news. We’d talk and talk and never run out of things to say. We enjoyed each other’s company so much that we could spend a week in a tiny ships’ cabin and never argue. She was a loving mother and grandmother. She was blessed to have lived a long, happy life. I will miss her encouragement, her comfort, her advice, and most of all her listening.

She is survived by her brother, Delbert Mason; many nieces and nephews, great- nieces and nephews, and beloved friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, brother, Julius Mason; sisters, Carmen (Mason) Brassfield, and Alice (Mason) Carman, husband, Charles; and grandson, Jeffrey.

Funeral Services at Marlon Gary East Chapel, (5456 E. Livingston Ave., 614-604-8774), Tuesday, October 11. The family will receive friends at 10:00, service at 11:00, burial to follow.
