Winona Steward, age 96. Sunrise October 23, 1924 and Sunset February 22, 2021. Preceded in death by Mother, Winona Coleman; Father, Gustavus Adolphus Steward; Sister, Mary Kelly (William); Sister, Anna Bishop; Brother, Frank Steward (Doris); Sister-in-Law, Virginia Steward; ex-husband, Joseph M. Powell. Children – Christopher Powell; Tony Powell (Diana), Mark Powell, Winona Powell, Joseph Powell (Shelley). Grandchildren, Brandon Abdullah Powell (Nazeerah); Aandrea Powell, Milaan Powell. Great-grandchildren, Maryam, Muhammad, Ayah, Rayyane, and Malayshia. Other nieces, nephews and their children.

She grew up in a very talented family. Her Father was one of seven sons and was an educator and Pastor. Her family is part of Gouldtown; a large Black family town in New Jersey. Her Sister, Anna was also a teacher and was well known in the Columbus community. Her Brother Frank, was an illustrator/designer at Rockwell Aerospace and was listed in Ebony’s People You should Know section. She was an AKA and a Columbus Ohio school teacher for over 50 years. She loved music; especially Jazz. She was a vocalist and played the piano. She graduated from both Columbus East High School, and Virginia State. She was born, raised, lived-in, and passed on in the same house on Columbus’s East Side.

Her Memorial service will be held Saturday March 13, 2021 on our family Zoom Link at 1:00 pm.

You left such a significant impression on every person who had the pleasure of knowing you. You were a true hero to many of us. Your laugh will be forever unforgettable. Your cooking was unmatched. Your love is everlasting. Your memory will always live through our family. We love you and we miss you, grandma.

I have very beautiful memories of Winona. She was such a beautiful person. I’m sorry I wasn’t able to visit her long before now, but I will always remember her and her family.
