Earl Jerome Hughes, a beloved father, grandfather, great-grandfather, uncle, brother and friend passed away to glory on Tuesday, April 2, 2024 in Columbus, Ohio at his home.

Earl was born March 20, 1949 in Martinsville, Virginia to James Franklin (“Frank”) Hughes and Pearl Ann McCloud. Earl grew up in a small, modest home where he and 15 other siblings were taught strong Christian values, the importance of giving, and hard work traits under the nurturing care of their parents. During his early upbringing, Earl attended Pilgrim Baptist Church in Martinsville along with his siblings.

He attended Albert Harris High School where his talented skills were displayed in football and baseball. Additional hobbies included playing golf with his brothers, watching NASCAR racing and westerns as well as
time in the local parks with family and friends after church on Sundays.

Earl also knew the value of service to country; he honorably served in the Marines during the Vietnam era reaching the rank of Corporal before his tour of duty ended. He spent the later years of his life employed by
Novtech in Columbus, Ohio where he was surrounded by love from family and friends.

Although Earl experienced adversities in life as is common to all mankind, he often reflected on the nurturing, wisdom, and prayers from his parents and family, and professed the same throughout his adult life.

Earl is preceded in death by his parents, Frank and Pearl Hughes; siblings, Ephonia, Leon, Glenwood, Katie, Cogene, Frances, and Saundra “Peaches.”

He is survived in life by his wife, Mary “Mag” Hughes; four daughters, Zelda Hughes, Kimberly Hughes, April Clemmons, from Martinsville, Virginia and Toni January from Springfield, Ohio; and two sons, Troy Hughes from Portsmouth, Virginia and Carlos Bostick from Burlington,
North Carolina; 13 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. His living siblings include Shirley (Joe-deceased) Young, Odell (Joyce) Hughes, Jimmy (Vickie) Hughes, Jesse Hughes, John Obie (Alice) Hughes, Deatrice “Dee Dee” (John Wayne-deceased) Simmons, Clyde Hughes, and Benjamin Hughes. Additionally, Earl enjoyed the companionship of Vicki McClain his caregiver, with whom he spent most of his time in Columbus.

Visitation 1:00 PM and Funeral Service 2:00 PM Friday, April 19, 2024 at MARLAN J. GARY FUNERAL HOME, THE CHAPEL OF PEACE EAST, 5456 E. Livingston Ave. (one block east of Noe Bixby, turn North on Lonsdale Rd).
