Evelyn Street, age 83, went home to be with the Lord on September 28, 2023, at Best Day’s Senior Living. She was born to Leroy E. Collins Sr. and Lucille Duncan Collins on February 14, 1940, in Akron, Alabama.

Evelyn graduated from Central High School, class of 1958. She met her high school sweetheart and from their marriage two children were born – Michele and Angie.
She was a member of Unity Church of Columbus for many years. She was also a member of the Black Women’s Coalition, the Black Ski Club of Columbus and the Black Women’s Golf Club of Columbus.

Evelyn was employed by The State of Ohio-The Bureau of Workers Compensation for 33 years. She worked her way up from Claims Examiner for the State of Ohio to Chief Human Resource Officer. She served for over 40 years on the Board of the Credit Union of Ohio. After retiring from the State of Ohio, she sold clothes for Don Castor Company and was employed by Nordstrom’s, Southwest Airlines and then turned to childcare for a number of years.

Evelyn was an avid traveler vacationing in Paris, Hawaii, and went on numerous cruises. She also enjoyed the Collins, Bailey, and LeVert family reunions and spending time with her family. She was a member of a social group dating back to the 1960s where they held cabarets and she showcased many of her beautiful gowns, some of which she made. She enjoyed sewing when she had time. Evelyn enjoyed sports and was a loyal fan of The Ohio State football team, where she was a season ticket holder for many years, and of course, she attended the Pasadena Rose Bowl parade and games.
Evelyn bowled in a league through The State of Ohio for many years. She never passed up an opportunity to show her talents during the Operation Feed campaign at The State of Ohio-from playing basketball to softball games-she was a true competitor. One of her proudest moments was her work on Barack Obama’s presidential campaign and attending his Inauguration in Washington.
Evelyn was a very classy and proud woman, who loved the Lord. She also loved to dance the famous two step with a shoulder shrug, snapping her fingers and line dancing. She also loved to do volunteer work and was a Certified Reiki Healing Specialist.

Evelyn is preceded in death by her parents, Leroy E. and Lucille Duncan Collins Sr.; sister, Patricia Collins; brother, Leroy E. Collins Jr.; sister-in-law, Anna Collins; nephew, William E. Collins II; nieces, Sonja Gill, Jamil Green and Leslee Green and mother-in-law, Elizabeth Street.

Condolence from Sheila (Alexander) Day on October 3rd, 2023 5:48 pm

Such fond memories of our time working together at the BWC. It was in Evelyn’s kitchen, at her home, during one of her awesome Christmas parties, that I met my husband, Ike…..and of course she had to be my maid-of-honor in our wedding.
Evelyn had a full and wonderful life and she touched the lives of many.
We all are just passing through. Will see you, Evelyn, in our eternal home.
Our love and prayers to the family.

There are so many words to describe her–beautiful, intelligent, classy, honest, adventurous and many more–which will make her presence missed. Knowing that she is with our Lord hopefully will bring you some comfort. Sending many hugs.

Michele and Angie
I’m so sorry to hear about the loss of your Mom. I can’t imagine how difficult this must be for you. Evelyn was always so kind and caring, and she had a way of making everyone feel loved and welcomed.
I know that no words can truly express the pain you are feeling right now, but I want you to know that I am here for you. Please know that my thoughts and prayers are with you and your family during this difficult time.
With deepest sympathy,

Condolence from Andrea (Simon) Barrett on October 6th, 2023 11:27 am

To the Street, Collins, Lamar(Chambers), Stevens Family and any I have accidently omitted, know that God is in control and knows our needs. I remember Evelyn from Bethany Baptist Church as a child and remembered she was always “dressed to the nines” and wore that winning smile all of the time. She was beautiful inside and out. Be comforted in the knowledge that she is now safe in the Loving Arms of Jesus and free from all pain and suffering. If you draw near to God, you will see her again on the other side. Blessings to all and know that you are loved.

Even though my heart is very sad right now, I smile because of the wonderful times I shared with my cousin Evelyn. My earliest memory of Evelyn is me being about 4 years old and fishing in the Five Mile Creek (behind Uncle Roy’s old house in Akron, Alabama) with Evelyn, my big sister Odessa, Uncle Roy and my daddy. That memory has always made me smile. I love my cousin Evelyn and will miss her, until we meet again.

My Heartfelt condolences to Evelyn’s family for her passing. I volunteered with Evelyn on the Board of Director of the Credit Union of Ohio for a few years. We would travel to Big 10 Conferences for the Credit Union, for a weekend, and after our classes, we loved to go shopping. May you rest in peace, and in Gods arms in Heaven, dear friend.
