Joseph Leon “Road Dog” Whitson, an esteemed member of the Columbus community, will be honored and remembered in a celebratory memorial service as we gather to pay tribute to a life well-lived. Born on November 14, 1944, in Berry, AL, Joseph later served his country with honor and courage, completing two tours in Vietnam and achieving the rank of Sgt. in the Army.

Throughout his life, Joseph was known for his dedication and hard work as a Foreman/Supervisor at Action Bumper Company, where he made a lasting impact. He was also a proud member of the Ohio Army National Guard and a passionate participant in various community organizations, such as the Flames Motorcycle Club where he also served as the National Secretary. He was also a member of the Masonic Order, Temple #1.

Joseph’s love for his family and friends was evident in everything he did. He cherished his role as a husband to his beloved wife of 53 years, Norma Jean, and as a father to his daughters, LaVita (Craig) and Kelly (Ray). He found joy in spending time with his grandchildren, Tierra, Arianna, and Kameron, as well as his great-granddaughter, Amya. Also left to cherish his memory, his sister, Mildred Louise Brewer and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Joe and Velma Whitson and siblings, Hosea, Joe, Mary Jewel, Willie Frank, Charles, Marveline, Robert L., Lorenzo, and Arnell.

A man of diverse interests, Joseph enjoyed bowling, fishing with Sonny and Mr. Gilbert, riding his motorcycle with friends, and engaging in friendly games of checkers. His kindness and warmth touched the lives of many, leaving an indelible mark on all who had the pleasure of knowing him.

In honoring Joseph’s memory, let us come together to celebrate a life filled with love, service, and cherished moments that will forever be held in our hearts. May his spirit live on through the countless lives he touched and the memories he created.
