Pastor Jeremiah Hunter was born June 20, 1938 in Omaha, GA to the late Moses and Eula Lee Hunter. He passed away Friday, April 1, 2022 at Marion General Hospital, Marion, OH. After growing up in Omaha, Jeremiah attended Lumpkin High School and at the age of 17, Jeremiah moved to St. Petersburg, FL. It was there he joined New Jerusalem Baptist Church and later received his Certificate of Ordination in 1966.
In 1970 he moved to Ohio and later became a member of Valley Baptist Church, Wheatland, PA where he was blessed to serve as an Associate Minister until called to Pastor at 1st Baptist Church, Wellsville, OH. He was pastor there for four years before being called to Mt. Olive Baptist Church in Midland, PA where he served for 11 years. Jeremiah was then called to Mt. Sinai Institutional Baptist Church, Johnstown, PA until his retirement in 2013 and subsequent move to Bainbridge, GA to be closer to his last surviving sibling.
Over the years Jeremiah attended and graduated from several seminary programs including the American Baptist Theological Seminary in January 1983, where he received a Certificate in Christian Training and a Diploma in Theology in May 1984 from the same institution. Still in further pursuit of excellence in the study of the Word, he received a Bachelor of Theology in April, 1986 from the International Bible Institute and Seminary. While “Grandpa” loved to sit for hours reading, studying the bible for himself, his greater joy seemed to be preparing sermons and compiling lessons for his “students”. Even after moving to Ohio because of health reasons, he continued to compile and distribute lessons to those whom he had encountered over the years that shared his passion for learning the word. His final lesson was sent out only a couple days before his passing. But those who knew him were aware there was still another passion that was dear to him and that was–Sports.
While he would occasionally talk of playing baseball as a youngster saying how he loved playing baseball as a kid, he was an avid Pittsburgh Steelers and Pirates fan and really enjoyed watching the games –even the older games from years gone by. He would give his analysis of games, players, draft picks and so forth. Yes, he was quite knowledgeable regarding the dynamics of each of his favorite past times.
Jeremiah is survived by his wife, Thelma Hunter; Sister, Betty (Thomas) Friendella; daughter, Vicki (Meaka) Ashley, Richwood, OH, sons, Marion (Ginger) Styles, Akron, OH, Timothy Hunter, Hilliard, OH; Grandsons Lorenzo (LaVerna) Styles, Andre’ (Victoria) Ashley; granddaughter Marisia Styles, and Alexandria Styles; 7 grandchildren; Daughter from previous marriage, Angelia (Fernois) Hunter-Bradberry of St. Pete., FL; granddaughter Tiara Bradberry, grandsons Fernois Bradberry, Jr., Javaris (Ashley) Bradberry, Jeremiah Bradberry, and 10 great-grandchildren; a host of other nieces, nephews, cousins, and other relatives and friends.
Jeremiah was preceded in death by his parents, brothers Charlie and Calvin Hunter, sisters, Barbara Bogan, Mildred Booker, and Floretha Hunter, four grandsons: Malcolm and Thomas Styles, Meaka Ashley, III and Maurice Stewart.

Condolence from Rev. Dr. Lamar D. Lee, Jr. on April 9th, 2022 10:01 pm

During my intro to the Johnstown community 1997, Dr. Hunter stood at the mic and pledged his support and patriarchal covering for Vada and I. We were true neophytes to the pastorate without a clue of the demands and sacrifices we would be undertaking. It was Dr. Hunter and Sis. Hunter who God had dispatched to our care, that provided our support, oversight and familial connection, while we traveled multiple times a week to First Cambria AME Zion.
Dr. Hunter became my spiritual surrogate challenging and instructing my Biblical, theological standing, inspiring my diligence to the primacy of Scripture and sharing his joy and laughter.
