Shirley Diana Reid was born on December 28, 1937 in Columbus, Ohio. She was the second of 4 children born to the union of Charles William Franklin and Julia “Trudy” Franklin. Shirley graduated from North High School in Columbus, Ohio. She worked for the Columbus Police Department for years before being employed with Columbus City Schools as a Secretary until she retired in 2000.
Shirley was an avid reader. She also enjoyed creating things by hand such as sewing, jigsaw puzzles, gardening, crocheting, and baking. She also enjoyed her Saturday shopping trips but most of all she enjoyed her family.
Shirley gave her life to Christ at an early age at Mt. Zion Church of God in Christ under Elder E.M. Wilson. She served faithfully at Mt. Zion through 5 pastoralships: Elder E.M Wilson, Elder R. H. Holmes, Bishop Warren E. Miller, Elder Kenny Stewart, and Superintendent Nehemiah Howard. Shirley wore many hats and served in many roles at Mt. Zion. She served as a member of the choir, Sunday School Teacher, Sunday School Superintendent, Vacation Bible School Teacher, Assistant Teacher for Prayer & Bible Band and Church Secretary. She loved working with children and looked forward to making boxes for the Christmas and Easter Programs every year. She did everything in the church that she felt she could do that was edifying to the Lord.
Shirley, affectionately known as “Nanny”, was the epitome of THE GOLDEN RULE: “Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.” She was a natural humanitarian and devoted her life to caring and providing for her family unconditionally. Shirley touched the lives of everyone met. She had a God given talent of making people feel loved. Her favorite scripture was Psalms 121: 1-2. Shirley was able to be the rock for family because she always looked to hills for her help. Her help definitely came from the Lord!
Blessed with 82 years of life, Shirley was called home to be with her Heavenly Father on Tuesday, May 12, 2020.
Shirley was proceeded in death by her parents, Charles and Julia Franklin; sisters, Phyllis Franklin and Beverly Milner; brother, James Franklin; aunts, Adele Bondurant and Daisy Hicks; and special cousin. Mary Bass-Ghee.
Shirley leaves to cherish her memory her husband, James P. Reid; loving children, Stanley (Donna) Craig, Stephanie Craig, Shawn (Shonda) Craig of Rowlett, TX, Sheryl (Ronnie) Wilson, Marvina (Fred) Leatherwood, and Vita Smith; special nephew, Allen (Charlene) Franklin; grandchildren, Chauntelle, Chaunte, Tia, Eugene, Kisha, Kamara, Stanisha, Travis, Shawn, Marcus, Rion, N’sya, Kyren, Jaylen, Aubrey, Shelby, and Comeh Brooke; 19 great grandchildren; 1 great-great grandson, Amir; special cousins, June Evelyn Black, Doris Butler, Peggy Jones, and Elder George Porter; sister-in-law, Giana Franklin; and a host of nieces, nephews, friends and church family.
Private Services entrusted to MARLAN J. GARY FUNERAL HOME, THE CHAPEL OF PEACE NORTH, 2500 Cleveland Ave.
Interment at Green Lawn Cemetery.

God blessed me with a mother that loved unconditionally and wholeheartedly. She taught me how to be faithful, considerate, caring, compassionate, persistent, hard working, loving and so much more. I will cherish her memory with all my heart and strive to be the mother, grandmother, aunt, sister, cousin and friend that she left us to cherish. I know you are with the Lord and that delights my heart.

Nanny I never knew I could feel this much sadness and joy at the same time. I’m sad because I can’t kiss you face anymore or hug you or hear you laugh and I’m going to miss you SO MUCH! But it gives me SO MUCH JOY knowing you are with the Lord and no longer suffering from Alzheimer’s. You were such an AMAZING grandmother and I thank God for you. You loved hard and fought a good fight… Rest on Nanny, I hope I’ve made you proud.

My Sincere Sympathy, and Prayers are with you. God is going to carry you through I promise you. He promised also never to leave you. Matt. 28:19-20. We can never forget Sister Shirley. A Special Women of God that loved God, and his people. She will be missed. The good news is, her troubles, pain, and sickness is all over. An Angel was dispatched from heaven suddenly, escorted her on a trip out of this world. She knew the Lord, so Shirley was packed, and ready to go. Her ticket was in her hand. (Salvation) That’s why she didn’t get a chance to say goodbye. Those clothes family, just give to someone. Shirleys changing into a new wardrobe within a twinkling of an eye. From mortal to immortality. It’s okay to cry, Jesus Wept. Then celebrate the life of this precious sole. Live for God so you can meet Sister Shirley on the other shore. Get ready for that great getting up morning. Everything will be alright. Be Blessed is my Prayer.

As a little girl I remember always coming to your house. I never wanted to go home. I always had fun. God makes no mistakes and I was honored to be a part of your life. Even if it was for just a moment. Aunt Shirley may you legacy live on in all who knew & loved you. You will be gone but never ever forgotten. To my dearest family…I know it’s not easy but I pray that you all find peace that surpasses all understanding during this time of loss.

As a very young man, my mother fell on hard times and my sister and I moved in with my sweet Aunt Shirley. Despite having a house full of kids occupying every space in her modest home, she showered us with love and care and guidance then and throughout my life, which I carry with me still today. This sadness will pass but the memories of your smile and kindness lives on forever. Love always…Rest in heaven, Aunt Shirley.
Shirley and I worked together at Shepard Administrative Center for 8 years. When I arrived, she was assigned to work with me and said “I am moving my desk into your office so I can take care of you.” I told her she had to behave and that she did! What a wonderful person…helpful, caring, kind, competent, and dependable. When we started a major computer project to give every school a separate budget for Federal and State Programs, she jumped right in and became a major player in the success of our program. She learned the world of computers quickly. I know she will be missed by her friends and family, but you should know that her extended family in the Columbus Schools will miss her also. I remember how she LOVED God and always acknowledging the goodness of the Lord! To be absent from the earthly body… I know she’s in the presence of our Savior…my heart felt condolences to the family.
Sis.Shirley Reid is a constant when thinking of Mt. Zion COGIC. My memories are filled with her teaching my Sunday School and VBS classes. And later singing with her in the Voices of Zion choir which I loved because she kept us all accountable. She was always teaching us. Her teaching influenced me to become the woman I am today. Thank you to the family for sharing her with us all.

My thoughts and prayers are with the family. I spent many days staying at Nanny’s house enjoying good food and conversation. She was always very inviting, patient, loving and kind. I’m certain that she helped to shape the person that I am today. Although she is no longer with us on earth, may her beautiful memories warm our hearts and provide comfort until we meet again.
