Sister Shirley Jean Gamble (nee Nelson) was born in Winston Salem, North Carolina on September 16, 1947 to the late James and Hilda Nelson. On April 27, 2023, she transitioned from labor to reward. At a very young age, Sister Shirley accepted the Lord as her Savior at Antioch Baptist Church in Winston Salem, North Carolina.
She attended Woodland Elementary and Atkins High School in North Carolina. In January of 1962, Sister Shirley, her parents and her siblings moved to Columbus, Ohio. The whole family joined Triedstone Missionary Baptist Church after settling in. Sister Shirley was active in the Youth Choir, Hattie Jackson Guild, Angelic Christian Voices, Psalms Praise team, and mass choir. She also participated in Gospel meets Symphony and she sang with Jonathan Wood and the Spiritual Uplifters.
As an adult, Sister Shirley attended and graduated from Mansfield Business College as a certified Data Processor. Afterwards, she was employed and retired from the Ohio Department of Health for 35 years of service.
In her spare time, Sister Shirley enjoyed gardening, sewing and in her later years, participating in Barnett’s stretching and step classes, while also engaged in Bible Study Fellowship (BSF). She loved getting together with family and friends for bowling and for the holidays; Christmas was always celebrated at her house! She had a love like no other for her children and grandchildren and she always ensure that they got home safe and sound (calling her back was a MUST).
Sister Shirley Gamble was preceded in death by Father James W. Nelson, Brother Kenneth A. Nelson, Mother Hilda P. Nelson, and nephew Kenneth Nelson Jr.
She leaves to cherish her memory by Brother Melvin (Linda) Nelson, Sister Jeanne Blackburn , Brother Cary Smart, Sister-In-Law Brenda Nelson, Daughter Cynthia Austin, Son Willie (Tina) Gamble, and Grandchildren Brandon Gamble, Iman C.J. Condolence from Lisa Mills on May 10th, 2023 1:47 pm

I met Shirley over 20 years ago at the Department of Health. As a new employee, Shirley kept an eye on me and kept me on the straight and narrow. Working together daily, lunches at Olive Garden and shopping at JC Penny’ Outlet. She grew to be my best friend Shirley came to Westerville for my Mother’s funeral last year, driving all the way to down Westerville road hitting all the red lights; slow and steady, just like Shirley. I don’t know what I would have done this lsat year without Shirley’s love and support after mother’s passing. She was there for me to talk and cry over the phone, morning, noon and night. Her faith and LOVE in GOD were ever present and acted as a beacon for others to follow her example. I will miss Shirley in ways I can’t imagine, but know that she is with our Lord, my mother and her mother watching down on us. My family and I offer our Prayers & Deepest Condolences to the family. Your loss is unimaginable MAY GOD GIVE YOU PEACE!!!!!!!!!!
