Samuel H. Smith, son of the late Henry and Emma Smith was born on April 5, 1931. He went home to be with the Lord on Friday, January 5, 2024.

Samuel was born in Wilmington, NC and grew up in Wilmington and what is now the City of Northwest/Leland, NC. He also spent several years in Norfolk, VA pursuing his love for singing. He returned to Northwest where he was a faithful member of Bethel AME Church until leaving NC.

Samuel married Ada Owens in 1957 and to this union two children were born, Samuel Jr. and Yvonne. He moved his family to Columbus, OH in the early 1960’s. Upon moving to Columbus, he joined the Community Church of Christ which later became 7th Avenue Community Missionary Baptist Church where he remained a member until he departed this life.

He was the epitome of hard work, dedication and resilience. For 30 years, he dedicated his talents to Buckeye Steel Casting Company leaving an indelible mark on the company and garnering respect from his colleagues.

Samuel was known for his rich bass voice and sang with the 7th Avenue Male Chorus and other quartets throughout the city. He also sang with the EUMBA Revival Choir for many years. Samuel was always willing to give a hand when needed and assisted with the Good Samaritan Feeding Ministry at 7th Avenue.

Left to cherish his memory his loving wife, Ada; two children, Samuel H. Smith, Jr. (Marjorie), Yvonne (Albert) Dulaney; four grandchildren, Reginald (Tomara) Dulaney, Ericka Dulaney, Miles Smith, Solomon Dean; 13 great grandchildren, one special nephew, Hollis (Tammie) Briggs; three sisters-in-law, Serlenia (Theodore) Gibbs, Shirley Freeman, Catherine Randolph and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

The legacy of Samuel H. Smith will forever be etched in the hearts and minds of those who loved him. His profound impact on his family, friends, and community will be cherished for generations to come.

Visitation 11:00 AM and Funeral Service 12:00 PM Tuesday, January 16, 2024 at Mt Hermon Missionary Baptist Church, 2283 Sunbury Rd.

Interment at Glen Rest Memorial Estates.

    Our prayer is God’s new mercies every morning, give you comfort, peace, strength and encouragement – Be Encouraged Psalm 121.

    We were truly saddened when we learned of the passing of our beloved brother Sam, however we have spiritual assurance knowing brother Sam lived a righteous life and will forever live life eternal with our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ hallelujah…well done my brother – Matthew 25.

    As former members of 7TH Avenue Missionary Baptist Church and dear friends to the Smith family, we bear witness that brother Sam was a kind, encouraging, joyous and outstanding quartet bass singer. Thanks for your mentorship and genuine love brother Sam and we shall forever be grateful.
