Dorothy Jean Gore

Dorothy Jean Gore, (Dot) age 81, was born in Paris, Texas on February 12, 1942, she was the daughter of Theresa Calloway and Ruth Booker. She was a military child living in Albuquerque, New Mexico and Denver, Colorado before moving to Columbus, Ohio at the age of 14. She attended Beery Middle School; Marion Franklin High School, where she met Hiram J. Gore Sr., together they had 3 children; Hiram J. Gore Jr. (Harmey), Dorothy J. Gore (Jeannie), and Denise A. Gore (Neicy).

Dorothy loved the Lord, she was baptized and accepted the Lord as her personal Savior. Before she became ill battling dementia and cancer; she was a faithful member of St. James Pentecostal Church / Christ Southern Missionary Church, which has been a family church for over 100 years.

Dorothy has been a nurturing caregiver. She was employed with numerous nursing home facilities; thereafter, she pursued her career as a dedicated employee at Children’s Hospital Emergency Room as a Suture Technician (stitching wounds, molding, applying cast to children’s fractured and broken bones, along with all the other tasks involved in the ER). She not only physically healed the children’s wounds, she healed them emotionally as well. She was also the Senior Suture Technician Trainer for all new employee classes. Dorothy retired from Nationwide Children’s Hospital after 40 years of service in 2008.  Dorothy has touched so many hearts; always filled with much love. She had a “Heart of Gold” and was always there for everyone no matter what the circumstance; and never complained. She put everyone first and asked so little for herself. She reaped less than she sowed.  She would always ask: Are you okay? Is there anything I can help do for you? Dorothy was such a caring, giving and unselfish person. She had a gracious and vibrant soul that would always brighten up a room with her beautiful dimples, gorgeous smile, unique joyful laugh, and genuine personality. She had a huge impact on everyone she came in contact with.

Dorothy enjoyed reading her bible, listening to her gospel cassettes and CD’s, wearing her favorite black hat and blue shirt, sewing, arts and crafts, planting flowers, bowling, collecting angel figurines, quilting, seek & find and crossword puzzles. Dorothy loved spending time with her family. She / We always looked forward to celebrating Holidays, staying up all night playing games, spades, and dancing. Dorothy loved to dance! Whenever she heard music, she was on the dance floor. We couldn’t wait during our Family Gatherings to do the Grandma / Dorothy Dance and eat her specialty collard/turnip greens. Dorothy had a very loud ear-piercing whistle! During our sporting events, when we heard that whistle, we all knew that Grandma was up in the bleachers. We had so much fun while she was trying to teach us her technique. But when she made that whistling sound: We all knew to stop talking and listen to what she had to say! Dorothy was very patient and understanding. It took a lot to get her upset, but when she reached that point, which wasn’t too often, she would speak her mind-not holding any expressions back. But it was always out of LOVE! Dorothy had a special way of turning a negative into a positive! She had such an uplifting spirit, and she knew just what to say to lift others spirits. Dorothy’s legacy will always be remembered as: A Strong Black Woman In ALL Aspects Of Her Life.
