On June 25, 1980, Susan embarked on a lifelong journey with her husband, Austin Lee Byrd, in Greensboro, Alabama. Together, they were blessed with five children, whose lives were enriched by Susan’s boundless love and devotion.

Susan dedicated 18 years of her life to service with the Industrial Commission, where her dedication and leadership shined brightly. She also advocated tirelessly for the rights and well-being of her fellow workers, serving as the OCSEA Columbus Industrial Commission Chapter President and Chief Steward, and Industrial statewide Assembly Vice President.

Susan’s legacy extends far beyond her professional endeavors. She was a pillar of strength and compassion to her family and friends; offering unwavering support and guidance to all who knew her. Susan’s presence in our lives will be deeply missed, but her memory will live on in the countless lives she touched. With her unparalleled sense of style and flair, Susan brought beauty and elegance to every moment of her life. Her vibrant personality lit up any room, and her infectious laughter will forever echo in our memories. She enjoyed gardening and spending time with her beloved grandchildren. Though she may no longer walk among us, Susan will forever remain in our hearts as a shining example of love, grace, and resilience. May her spirit continue to inspire us to live life fully and love deeply, just as she did.

Susan leaves to cherish her precious memory and continue her legacy, husband Austin Lee Byrd, children Austin (Elisha) Byrd II, Shawntez Byrd, Oweader Byrd (Renell “Shaun” Bell), Allan Byrd, and Sharae Byrd. Grandchildren A’lissa Byrd, Shawniece Byrd, Austin Lee Byrd III, Shawniyah Byrd, and Kori Bell-Byrd. Although she was an only child, Susan’s circle of family extended beyond blood ties to include her dear cousins and friends who became her siblings. Lucille, Tywonda, Yetta, Herbie, Viola, Pokie, Sally, and Larry (Donnie) were not only her relatives but also her lifelong companions, offering unwavering support and companionship throughout the years.

She also leaves her aunts Mae Frances Eppes, Willie O. Brown, Ethel Pearl Williams, and Mildred Sledge. Mother-in-law Mary Lee Smith, sister and brother in-laws Orlando (Donna) Byrd, Barbara (Benny) Abrams, Deborah Brown, Darlene (Willie) Hardy, Sidney (Shantina) Byrd, Donnie Byrd, and Mary Smith. Endearing memories will be held by Michael Sowell who cherished her dearly along with a host of many additional relatives and friends.

May she rest in eternal peace, knowing that her love lives on in the hearts of those she leaves behind.

To the family of Susan who I called My Diva and sometimes Sue Sue what a Beautiful person inside and out. She had so much Grace and courage that has inspired so many. I will miss our conversation and the laughs. We had this little thing where we see something strange and neither of us would utter a word it was the look we gave we knew what it meant but others didn’t. I’m gonna miss my Diva girl hearing her soft spoken voice at the Fragrance counter at Macy’s and for sure the music in the park. It’s never gonna be a Goodbye for me only see you later…..Rest well my Diva Girl
