Hattie Yvonne Ballantine was born on July 6, 1945 to Willie Leslie Sr., and Lucy Leslie in New York City. She was a member of the fencing team in high school. Hattie graduated from Washington Iving High School. After high school, Hattie was employed with the United States Postal Service. Later in life, Hattie left the Post Office to become a Home Health Care Provider. She enjoyed caring for people.
Hattie married Anselmo Ballantine Jr. on March 29, 1969. The two decided to expound their love, so they began their family of five children, Delvin, Velinda, Sherise, Cynthia and Zelvin.
Hattie is known by others as “Mrs. Yvonne” or “Monkey”. Hattie had a heart filled with so much joy and love. Her home was always filled with family, her nieces, nephews, siblings and the children of the community. Hattie was always one you could count on. She always made sure you had something to eat. She was a great listener and provided words of wisdom when needed.
Mrs. Yvonne had a smile made of sunshine. When she smiled, she lit up the room. She passed her beautiful inherited smile down to her children. Hattie enjoyed washing clothes and ironing while she watched westerns, old black and white TV shows and gangster movies. She was very happy when her hair stylist, Gina washed her hair. She would say “Gina is a little lady with strong hands, I love it when she washes my hair”. Hattie loved to eat, but snacks were her favorite. She loved holidays and birthdays. She loved when family gathered even if we just watched westerns, gangster movies, or old black and white tv shows with her.
Monkey had this amazing intuition where she knew the right words to say for your situation. She always believed that everyone had their own journey to walk. Hattie Yvonne (Monkey) Ballantine always found the good in others. She never expressed hate or dislike upon anyone. She leaves her mark on all the many lives she impacted outside of the lives of her children. Today her memory lives on as we continue her legacy.
She leaves behind a wealth of family and friends including her sister, Nannie Louise (Bay) Williams; brothers, Alger Glover and Charles Leslie; children, Delvin Ballantine (Chanae), Cynthia Ballantine, Sherise Ballantine-Smith (Andre Sr.), and Zelvin Ballantine (Erica); grandchildren, Delvin Jr., Bilal, Andre Jr., Christopher, Zahria, Santino, Delvonna, Julisa, Donovan, Lauryn, Tasia, Shamar, Jeremiah, Dania, Mohogany; great grandchildren, Aiden, Aleiah, Aisia and Layla; nieces and nephews, Natasha, Willie Jr., Simone, Stacey, Latoya, Shamira, Edward, Jennifer, Timothy, Kimberly and Christen. Several grandnieces and grandnephews and near and dear family friends.
Hattie is preceded in death by her parents, Willie Leslie Sr. and Lucy Leslie; husband, Anselmo Ballantine Jr.; brothers, John Leslie and Willie (Shorty) Leslie Jr.; daughter, Velinda Ballantine.
