John W. Goodman

GoodmanJohn

John “Jay” Goodman, Columbus, Ohio, was born January 30, 1975 and departed this life on July 17, 2020.

John will be forever and lovingly remembered for his perfect balance of strength and sensitivity, his dedication to his family and friends whom he loved, and his keen sense of humor.

John, the middle of three children, was the most accident-prone, had a legendary fear of mice, and loved to make people laugh. His propensity for dog bites, falls, and a run-in with a lawn mower did not dampen his love of sports, which he shared with his son, brother, and nephews.

John shared a very special bond with his mother, remaining a “Mama’s Boy” to the very end. He also took every opportunity to share the pride he felt for his children.

John is preceded in death by his maternal grandparents, Robert Goodman and James and Ruby Mathews.

John is survived by his parents, John and Donna Mathews; partner, Ebony Smith; children, Ja’la, Jalin, and Malika Goodman; grandson Avion Goodman; sister, Shawnta (Bobby) Greene; brother, Justin (Charmaine) Mathews; grandmother, Annie Devonshire; 5 stepchildren, 6 nieces and nephews; and a host of aunts, uncles, and cousins.

John was a loving friend to many who are saddened by his death.

Private Services entrusted to MARLAN J. GARY FUNERAL HOME, THE CHAPEL OF PEACE NORTH, 2500 Cleveland Ave.

To the family of John. You have my deepest sympathy and I’m praying for strength, understanding and comfort. I worked in the accounting office at Columbus Cadillac where I met John 1995 through 1997. Oh the fun, deep conversation, parenting, and laughter we had together. I left and became a nurse. I seen John’s name in my workque to call to schedule an appointment in our infusion center. I had a feeling I knew him. So one day I left my unit and walk over to his unit at the hospital where he was surrounded by his children. Soon as I seen his face I knew it was him. After I told him who I was and where I knew him from his face lit up. I’m so thankful that God led me to see him and be able to talk about old times. I will always remember that smile and our time together!! Rest in peace my brother!!! You will always be remembered!

It has taken me three years to come here and read these condolences. I am so thankful God sent you to my brother in his final days. I know seeing you and having the opportunity to reminisce made him happy. I am finally at a point where I spend more time celebrating his life than mourning his death. Seeing this brought a smile to my face. Thank you for caring and sharing your memory
