Mildred Ringer Tynes

Mildred Ringer Tynes was born from the union of Lee and Logan Bibb on August 29, 1926. She attended Reeb Avenue Elementary, Barrett Junior High and graduated from South High School in 1945.
Being athletic, she enjoyed dancing, and playing basketball or volleyball for the Southside Settlement. Sister Tynes’s Christian journey began at Hosack Baptist Church when she was baptized by Reverend HH Teague at 13 years of age.

In 1946 she married Sanford Ringer son of Lilly and Deacon Paul Ringer. Together they became parents to three girls, Pamela, Wanda and Sandra.
Mildred found her career in children’s daycare where she would spend the next thirty years. First employed by Southside Day Care Center where she honed her teaching skills with workshops and education forums and was Certified by the State of Ohio and by Columbus Public Schools. Later she spent many years teaching at Columbus Child Daycare on the Eastside. When her oldest daughter, Pam was killed in a tragic car accident, Mildred found herself adopting and raising Pam’s then 2 year old son Charles.

In 1994 she lost her first husband Sanford to illness but found love again when she married Lee Tynes who is now deceased. Although she had retired from daycare, she remained active by working in the Job Placement of Ohio and remained active in the senior community by taking aerobics classes and sewing classes. Well into her 80’s she was able to visit shut ins and still enjoyed working in the church where she had been on the Senior Usher Board for 30 years, a member of the Willie Mae Teague Circle, the Calling committee, Missionaries and the Birthday List as well as being co chairman for the Hallelujah Night event. The organization closest to her heart was the Wanda B. Yates Education foundation named for deceased daughter and founder Wanda, A Science Teacher from Independence High School. For years Mildred helped in the Saturday tutoring sessions and helped to designate funds for free school supplies and book bags to school children, more than often contributing the largest donations herself. Mildred enjoyed her sewing group, making lap pads for the ill and putting together cross necklaces for the homeless. She was fashionable and loved wearing her collection of hats to church on Sundays. Unlike some grandmothers, she embraced being called “Granny” by the grandchildren who adored her.

Mildred is preceded in death by husband Sanford Ringer, sister Thelma and (brother in law John Riley) brothers Marvin Bibb Sr and brother William Bibb. Also preceded in death by in-laws Artie and Lee Washington, Pauline and Bill Thomas, Dorothy and Henry Moore. Mildred is survived by Sister in-law Ola Mae Bibb several nieces, nephews and cousins. Also left to morn are daughter Sandra Ross and grandchildren Jada (Russell Johnson) of Little Rock Arkansas, Charles Ringer, Darrell Ringer and Kyla Ross. Mildred is Great grandmother to 11 and Great Great grandmother to 10.
Mildred’s positivity and vibrance attracted people to her extended family and there are few people who grew up on the south side of Columbus who did not have connection or memory of Mrs. Ringer. When people asked her what keeps her strong through all her losses and tribulation and she answers the Love of God through all things.
